Featured Story

Ruskin’s Always Watching

When storms start scambling in the gulf, Ruskin keeps watch and makes sure they get the word out. Our National Weather Service office sits right here, glued to the radar so we don’t have to, firing off warnings fast enough to beat the first fat raindrops. It feels local because it is.

Instead of a countywide “everyone panic,” you’ll get storm-based polygons that ping your phone only when your slice of Southshore is in the path. You’ll see the crawl on TV, get the push in your weather app, and if you like extra credit, you can even listen on a weather radio or take a free SKYWARN spotter class.

Southshore translation. Keep Wireless Emergency Alerts on, pick a favorite app, know your safe room, and bring the patio cushions inside before they try to visit the neighbors. When that polygon hugs your block, move first and ask questions later. Our weather nerds are our neighbors, which is why we hear it first, then hear the thunder.

A Little Local Theater

A little down the road in Plant City, but worth the drive. Parlor Story is a 1947 Broadway play by William McCleery, a former newspaper reporter who later taught at Princeton. Set in a small university town, it follows a retired reporter turned journalism professor at a moral crossroads: take a promotion that compromises his values or stand up for what’s right to protect the next generation of writers. It’s a lesser-known gem, and this production leans into that discovery with rich, challenging roles the cast loves.

We should all support the arts as much as we can. These aren’t just performances, they’re reflections of life that remind us what humanity truly means. The arts fuel the passion, curiosity, and innovation that push our civilization forward.

Southshore After Dark

Part 1: Wind in The Mangroves

On a windy fall evening when the traffic slows and the old folks turn in for bed, the Alafia River comes to life. Lonely voices drift down the current, and locals know to lock their doors.

They say it’s the ghosts of Toby and Lisa Shuttles, visitors that went missing one night on the river and were never heard from again. On the run from authorities in Nevada after a string of robberies, the two lovers made their last stand on the muddy banks before plunging into the murky waters and vanishing forever.

If the rumors are true, the Shuttles left a trail of destruction in their wake, starting at the Red Rock Casino.

Symmes Shuffle: 301 Traffic Slides East

Heads up, Riverview. US 301 at Symmes Road is getting a new traffic pattern this week, so plan a few extra minutes and bring your nicest patience. Traffic shifts to the east side of 301 through the Symmes intersection, with two lanes each way between Berner Lane and Avian Forrest Drive. Driveways and side streets stay open, but expect delays for about two months while crews rebuild the west side in concrete.

This is part of a bigger intersection overhaul that kicked off in mid-September and runs into early 2027. Treat the orange barrels like your in-laws. Give them space, and everyone gets home happier. We’ll keep you posted, but for now, budget the time and save the left-lane heroics for another day.
