If Sarah Connor Could See Us Now

80’s babies will recall Sarah’s dire warnings about AI. A generation raised on the fear that one day the robots will rise up, become self-aware, and realize we’re the problem. Fast forward 40 years, and folks talk to AI more than they talk to their parents. Imagine young Sarah’s dismay. But there are moments where AI is doing more than writing essays and picking our playlists. In a few labs across the bay, it’s learning how to help save lives.
At USF’s RARE Lab, researchers are building rescue robots that don’t yell directions, they shine them. Picture a drone slipping into a dark, chaotic scene after a storm and painting a bright arrow across a slab of concrete, showing people where to go when shouting won’t cut it and radios are useless. The machine reads the room, then lays clear visuals on walls, doors, and floors so rescuers and survivors aren’t playing Marco Polo in the dark.
If you’ve ever tried to give instructions over a generator’s roar after a hurricane, you know why this matters on our side of the bay. In Southshore, the power goes out, the wind still howls, and confusion spreads fast. A robot that speaks in light could cut through the noise and give first responders something precious in an emergency: time. Minutes saved getting someone toward the exit or away from danger can be the difference between a scary story and a tragic one.
It’s early days, but the team is pushing from lab demo to real work in the field. If it lands the way they hope, you might see Bay Area crews training with drones that guide people the same way runway lights guide a plane, only with fewer delays and better snacks. File this under science fiction until it isn’t. And Sarah, if you’re reading this, we hear you. But if the robots want to point the way out during the next big storm, we’re not going to argue.
⚖️ Your Personal Injury Attorney Tip of the Week
Brought to you by McBreen & Nowak P.A.
Preserve the Proof: Why Evidence Matters After an Accident
Accidents happen, but what comes next can drastically affect what happens in a potential claim. The moments right after a crash are critical, because once evidence is lost, it’s gone for good.
If you’re ever involved in an accident, ensure everyone at the scene is safe, then take pictures. Both vehicles, skid marks on the road, traffic lights/traffic signs, weather, and (when you get home) any visible injuries. Get witness names and numbers and never rely on “someone else” to collect the details. Your attorney can’t rebuild the scene, but they can build your case if you give them the tools to do it. Protect yourself by preserving the evidence.

🏝 THE RIVER BENEATH US

Part 4: One Last Look
Lena’s scream vanished into the thunder. A pale hand clawed the gunwale. Gray, sinewy flesh with silt-caked fingernails. They scraped across the railing, then slid back beneath the water. Moments later, Cal surfaced.
“Cal!” Lena called.
Without responding, he climbed aboard, swung the bow around, and twisted the throttle. The boat leapt toward home.
“Something… someone was back there,” Lena whispered.
“Ghost stories,” Cal said. “Forget about tonight. Forget about it all.”
She wanted to argue, but the look in his eyes stole her voice. In silence, they rode back to the dock then parted ways.
Back home, Lena scoured over the photos and documents one last time. She’d missed something. Something important. Something critical. Hunched over her desk, she strained her eyes, combing through every detail.
The night wore on, and Lena started to fall asleep. Suddenly, the lamp flickered, and she blinked, then the power went out. A single footfall sounded down the hallway.
“Miss Morales,” a familiar voice said, smooth as the tide. “You were told to stop digging.”

Breast Cancer Awareness

October isn’t just pumpkin-spice season. It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the reminder lands close to home in Southshore. Breast cancer is common, and the difference early detection makes is real. If you’re in the screening range, talk to your doctor, get that mammogram on the books, and pay attention to changes. Men can be affected too, so if something feels off, speak up.
Make it local and personal. Ask your mom if she’s scheduled hers. Text a friend and offer to ride along. If cost or time is in the way, lean on community resources and make a plan anyway. Awareness isn’t a ribbon or a hashtag. It’s noticing, acting, and giving ourselves more time at the table with the people we love.
