East Bay Takes the Trophy
Indians top Tampa Bay Tech in district championship, punching their ticket to regionals

It’s championship season in Southshore, and East Bay just gave the community something to celebrate. The East Bay girls’ flag football team took down Tampa Bay Tech Thursday night to win the district championship, finishing the job with a strong 39–26 victory.
From the start, this was East Bay’s game to control. Coming in with a 13–3 record and one of the highest-scoring offenses in the area, the Indians had been putting up points all season, averaging over 30 per game. And when the lights were brightest, they delivered again.
Tampa Bay Tech didn’t go quietly. The Titans came in battle-tested and kept things competitive, but East Bay’s offense proved too much down the stretch. By the final whistle, the message was clear. District champs.
It’s a big moment not just for East Bay, but for a sport that continues to grow across Florida. Girls’ flag football has exploded in popularity, and performances like this are exactly why. The talent is real, the competition is rising, and Southshore is right in the middle of it.
Now, the focus shifts forward. With districts behind them, East Bay moves on to the regional round, where the stakes get even higher, and the path to a state title begins to take shape. For now, though, this one belongs to them.
A championship win.
A statement performance.
And a Southshore team still very much in the hunt.
A $1.6 Billion Bet on Southshore’s Future
Major wastewater project set to support Southshore growth

Growth in Southshore isn’t slowing down, and now the infrastructure is starting to catch up. Hillsborough County has kicked off a massive wastewater project centered in Lithia that will bring a new advanced treatment plant online, expand major pipelines, and add a high-capacity pump system to move wastewater more efficiently across South County. The goal is to take pressure off aging systems and build a regional network that can actually keep up with the pace of development.
While the construction starts in Lithia, the benefits stretch across the heart of Southshore. Communities like Riverview, Gibsonton, Apollo Beach, Ruskin, Wimauma, and Sun City Center are all part of the service area this system is designed to support. As those areas continue to grow, this project is what helps ensure the infrastructure doesn’t fall behind.
Right now, much of South County is operating on systems that weren’t built for the level of growth we’re seeing today. This upgrade increases capacity, improves how wastewater is moved throughout the region, and expands reclaimed water use for irrigation, helping reduce strain on natural resources and protect local waterways.
There will be some short-term tradeoffs. Construction, roadwork, and disruptions are part of a project this large.
But the long-term goal is clear. A more reliable system, fewer capacity concerns, better environmental protection, and the ability for Southshore to continue growing without constantly playing catch-up.

New gene therapy allows people born blind to gain vision in a groundbreaking medical breakthrough

Imagine being born without sight and then one day, being able to see. That’s not science fiction anymore.
A group of scientists just won one of the biggest awards in science, often called the “Oscars of Science,” for developing a gene therapy that can restore vision in people who were born blind.
Let that sink in. Not improving eyesight. Not correcting vision. Restoring it.
The treatment targets a rare genetic condition in the retina, where faulty genes prevent the eye from processing light. Using a harmless virus, scientists deliver a working copy of that gene directly into the eye, giving those cells the instructions they were missing.
And for some patients, the results have been life-changing. People who once could only detect light are now seeing shapes, movement, and even faces. Some are experiencing vision for the first time in their lives.
This didn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of decades of research and years of testing to prove it works. But here’s the bigger picture. This isn’t just about vision. It’s about what’s coming next.
Gene therapy is opening the door to treating diseases at their source, not just managing symptoms. From blindness to other genetic conditions, medicine is starting to shift in a big way.
We’re not just treating problems anymore. We’re rewriting the code. And somewhere out there right now… Someone is seeing the world for the very first time.

Disabled American Veterans is helping make sure local veterans and their families get the support they’ve earned. Through services like benefits assistance and free transportation to the James A. Haley VA Medical Center, the organization plays a big role in connecting veterans with care and resources. Right now, there’s also a need for volunteers in the Sun City Center and Ruskin area, especially drivers and dispatchers, to help keep that support moving.
