Safer School Routes Coming to East Bay, Eisenhower, and Corr

If you’ve got a student at East Bay High, Eisenhower Middle, or Corr Elementary, you know the morning and afternoon school runs can feel like a mix between rush hour and a NASCAR pit lane. Hillsborough County says they’re working on it.

The County is taking feedback now through August 22 on a set of proposed improvements to make walking and biking to school safer. Think brighter crosswalks, better signage, slower turning cars, extended school zones, and more ramps so kids (and parents) aren’t forced to play “Frogger” on the way to class.

There’s even talk of a shared-use path along Old Big Bend Road, and this is a big one, a possible pedestrian bridge over Big Bend Road near Covington Garden Drive, which could be part of the Southcoast Greenway Trail. Translation: fewer near misses, more peace of mind.

The goal? Make it safer and more comfortable for students who live within two miles of school and don’t get bused. Your input now can help shape what gets built later, so if you’ve got thoughts, now’s the time to share them.

Because we all want our kids to get to school safely… and preferably without needing a stunt double.

Cruising Toward Change: Apollo Beach Blvd Safety Study Rolls On

We’re covering all kinds of traffic today in The Southshore Circle. Now, it’s time for Apollo Beach Boulevard to get its turn.

As Apollo Beach grows, so do the real-life challenges of getting around, especially if you’re walking, biking, or even scooting through on a golf cart. That’s why Hillsborough County has launched the second round of public feedback on the Apollo Beach Boulevard Traffic Safety Study, and your two cents can shape the road ahead.

What’s on the table and your route:

  • Filling in sidewalk gaps

  • Safer mid-block crossings and high-visibility crosswalks

  • Raised crosswalks and better lighting

  • Reconfiguring a travel lane for bikes, golf carts, or both

  • Adding left-turn lanes at the notoriously tricky Fairway Blvd/Manila Palm Way intersection

  • Potential roundabouts, traffic signals, and speed limit tweaks

How You Can Weigh In:

  • Speak up in person at the Second Open House:
August 12 at 6 p.m., Apollo Beach Elementary School (501 Apollo Beach Blvd)

  • Submit feedback online anytime between August 5–19, 2025, via Hillsborough County’s Public Engagement Hub

Whether you’re walking the dog, carting kids, or just avoiding rush-hour chaos, your input helps ensure the improvements are practical and practical for real Southshore living.

So take a quick moment, make a few clicks, and maybe make your commute or your kid’s walk to school a whole lot smoother.
