Beer Can Island’s Next Chapter
Beer Can Island has always had a colorful past — and now, it’s adding another chapter to its already legendary story.
After a string of legal battles, storms, and even a for-sale sign, the court cases have finally been dismissed. The current owners are moving full steam ahead with plans to revive the sandy slice of party paradise.
What’s coming?
Upgraded docks (no more praying your boat doesn’t drift)
A live concert space (yes, live music on the island)
A new food and beverage area (goodbye, soggy sandwiches)
Most locals seem to be raising their drinks in celebration — but not everyone is thrilled. There’s a small but vocal group who worry the island’s charm might be lost in the upgrade.
We’ll keep an eye on development progress and let you know when the first events drop.

Can AI Take Your Order?
We’ve talked about the impact of AI on Southshore before — but it looks like the robots might be rolling in sooner than expected.
Yum! Brands, the parent company of Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Habit Burger & Grill, has announced a major partnership with NVIDIA to bring artificial intelligence into its restaurant operations. Think voice-automated ordering, faster service, and AI-powered back-of-house operations.
Pilot programs have already started in select Taco Bell and Pizza Hut locations across the U.S. — and while no official word has dropped yet, it’s very possible the Southshore area could be part of the expansion soon.
If you notice a robot taking your next drive-thru order... don’t panic. Just maybe ask it to hold the pickles.
We’ll keep you posted as this develops.
Late Shifts and No Breaks?
Summer is almost here, and for many teens, that means picking up a job and earning some extra cash. But a new bill moving through the Florida legislature could change just how much — and when — teens are allowed to work.
If passed, the proposed law would allow 16- and 17-year-olds to work more than 30 hours a week, even on school nights, and would remove the requirement for mandatory breaks. It could also allow some 14- and 15-year-olds (like homeschoolers or those in virtual school) to take on overnight shifts.
Supporters say it puts more control in the hands of parents and aligns state law with federal guidelines. But critics warn it could put teens on the front lines of late-night labor, with potential risks to their health, academics, and family life.
While nothing is official yet, families in Southshore should keep an eye on this one — especially those with teens juggling classwork and part-time jobs. We’ll keep you posted as the bill moves forward.
