Fast Bikes, Real Consequences

Southshore has been a golf cart-heavy community for a long time. Especially in Sun City, where retirees use them as their preferred way of getting around. But now it’s officially e-bike season, and just like golf carts, finding their place in the flow of traffic is starting to get a little dicey.

You’ve seen them. Teens flying down sidewalks in Riverview, cutting across 301 in Ruskin, zipping through Apollo Beach like they’ve got somewhere urgent to be. At first glance, it looks like harmless fun. Just kids being kids. But some of these bikes could beat Usain Bolt in a race. And they’re doing it in traffic, without helmets, no roll cage, no airbags, no second chances.

Doctors down the road at HCA Brandon say they’re now treating multiple e-bike injuries every week. Brain bleeds. Broken necks. Chest trauma. Most of the time, it’s teens. And most of the time, they weren’t wearing helmets.

A 14-year-old from Polk County died this month after being hit while riding his e-bike. He wasn’t being reckless. He just wasn’t protected.

As a community, we’ve got to take this seriously. Our roads aren’t playgrounds. Between Amazon vans, construction trucks, and drivers racing to beat the light at Big Bend, it doesn’t take much for something to go wrong.

So if your kid has an e-bike or is begging for one, talk to them. Make the helmet non-negotiable. Ride with them. Show them the bike lanes. Help them understand the risk. And remind them: a quick ride can change everything.

🛍️ Southshore, take note: Florida’s Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday now lasts a full month and it starts this next Friday!

From Aug 1 through Aug 31, 2025, you’ll pay no sales tax on qualifying back-to-school and tech essentials:

• Clothing, footwear, backpacks, and wallets priced at $100 or less

• School supplies and learning aids priced at $50 or less per item

• Personal computers and accessories priced at $1,500 or less

This tax holiday is now permanent in Florida, meaning no need to rush or schedule around a single weekend. But it still only applies during August, so your savings window is about to close!
