A Quick Moment Of Self-Promotion
Don't worry. It'll be over in about 30 seconds

Our publication represents a little over 10% of Southshore. 38,832 people to be exact. On Facebook, that number changes dramatically. Our follower count sits around 4,500, but our monthly views average 2.1 million. That's a significant sample size of an area with roughly 300,000 residents.
In Southshore, there are between 5,000 and 9,000 businesses. From operations with 100 employees to home-based single-person shops. From food trucks to waterfront restaurants. From a mobile mechanic to HVAC companies with three offices. What do they all have in common? They are all competing for the attention of the same 300,000 people.
We capture 10% of that attention every single day. But we only partner with a total of 50 businesses. That's 50 companies featured in everything we do all year, helping us drive stories, highlight events, fund prizes and giveaways, and keep Southshore residents in the know.
We only have 22 spots left. Twenty-two opportunities for a business to partner with one of the fastest-growing publications in the area and make sure the community knows exactly who they are. If you're interested in aligning yourself with the community you serve and securing your spot before someone else does, click the link below to find out more.
That's my whole spiel. Back to the news.

New housing data shows a record number of young adults living with their parents as first-time homeownership becomes increasingly difficult to achieve

For generations, the path looked pretty simple. Graduate. Get a job. Move out. Buy a house. These days? Not so much.
A new housing report found that more than 25 million Americans under 35 now live with their parents, representing roughly one-third of young adults. At the same time, first-time homebuyers account for just 21% of home purchases, the lowest share since recordkeeping began in 1981. The typical first-time homebuyer is now 40 years old. And honestly, is anyone surprised?
Home prices remain significantly higher than they were before the pandemic, mortgage rates are still elevated, and rents haven't exactly become affordable either. Housing researchers estimate the United States remains millions of homes short of what is needed to meet demand.
That reality is playing out right here in Southshore. For many young adults, the choice isn't between buying a house and renting an apartment. It's between renting an apartment and continuing to live at home while trying to save enough money to eventually buy something.
The old stereotype of unemployed adults living in their parents' basement doesn't really fit anymore. According to the report, most of the young adults living at home are employed, and many have college degrees. The problem isn't necessarily jobs. It's affordability.
In a way, the trend helps explain some of the growth debates we've been covering lately. On one side are residents worried about preserving community character, protecting rural areas, and managing traffic. On the other are younger families trying to find a home they can actually afford.
Neither side is wrong. The challenge is that both realities exist at the same time. For now, millions of young Americans are delaying homeownership, marriage, and household formation while they wait for housing costs to become more manageable. Whether that happens through more construction, lower interest rates, or some combination of both remains to be seen. Until then, mom and dad's guest room may be one of the hottest housing markets in America.

We Still Have No Idea What's Living Down There

For all the incredible technology humans have invented, here's a fun reminder: We still don't know what's living in large parts of Earth's oceans.
A recent deep-sea expedition exploring previously uncharted areas of the Pacific Ocean identified 31 potential new species, including strange corals, sea stars, sponges, and other creatures that scientists had never documented before. And before you ask, yes, some of them look exactly like something that would try to eat the crew in a science fiction movie.
The discoveries were made thousands of feet below the surface in an environment so remote and difficult to reach that many of these areas had never been explored. Scientists say it highlights just how little we still know about the deep ocean, despite living on a planet that's more than 70% covered by water.
In fact, experts estimate that a significant portion of the ocean floor remains unmapped and unexplored. Think about that for a second. We've sent spacecraft beyond our solar system. We've landed robots on Mars. We've built computers that fit in our pockets. Yet there are still entire ecosystems on Earth filled with creatures nobody knew existed. It's a little humbling.
It's also a nice reminder that not every discovery requires a trip to another planet. Sometimes the next great discovery is hiding right here on Earth, thousands of feet below the waves, minding its own business and hoping we don't show up with a submarine. At least not yet.
