Southshore’s Cannabis Crunch

Limited licenses, stalled legalization, and new regulations are reshaping the marijuana industry

If you’ve ever driven down US 41, then you’ve probably smelled just how impactful the marijuana industry can be. It’s hard to miss. What’s easier to miss is just how complicated things have become behind the scenes.

For years, Florida’s cannabis industry has been pitched as the next big opportunity. A booming market. Endless demand. But lately, reality has started to set in, and for a lot of companies, it hasn’t been pretty.

Florida’s system is still tightly controlled, with only a limited number of companies allowed to operate. That’s created a landscape where a handful of major players dominate, while smaller or aspiring businesses are left on the outside looking in. Many have spent years and millions chasing licenses, only to run into delays, denials, or legal roadblocks.

And right now, the industry is hitting a turning point. Efforts to legalize recreational marijuana in Florida continue to stall, keeping the market limited to medical use for the foreseeable future. At the same time, lawmakers are continuing to shape how the industry can grow, including where dispensaries can open and how expansion happens.

There’s even more change coming. On the federal side, potential shifts like marijuana rescheduling could ease some burdens, but access to traditional banking and financing is still limited, making it harder for companies to grow. Meanwhile, new rules targeting hemp-derived products are expected to take effect in 2026, which could significantly reshape that side of the market.

Put it all together, and you’ve got an industry that looks like it’s everywhere… but is still very much boxed in. From the outside, it feels like cannabis is booming. Dispensaries are popping up, products are getting stronger, and the presence is obvious. But underneath, it’s a different story.

What was supposed to be a wide-open opportunity has turned into a tightly managed system where access, regulation, and timing matter just as much as demand.

Summer, Summer Summer Time

Upcoming Fun in the Sun in Southshore

Summer in Southshore is the perfect time for kids to make new friends and learn new skills. Maybe the first Southshore summer activity to keep on your radar is sailing.

Right here in our backyard, programs like Tampa Sailing Squadron Youth Sailing are giving kids the chance to get out on the water and try something different from the usual summer routine.

This is real hands-on learning. Not screens, not sidelines. Kids are learning how to handle a boat, read the wind, and work as a team. It builds confidence, independence, and problem-solving skills in a way that sticks.

The program offers camps and classes for a range of ages and skill levels, so whether your child is brand new or ready to advance, there’s something for everyone.

And if you’re spending summer in Florida, you might as well be on the water.

Sailing is just one of many activities popping up around Southshore this summer, but it’s a great reminder you don’t have to go far to give your kids something memorable. Because a summer on the water… that’s one they won’t forget.

Mosquitoes Aren’t Guessing… They’re Hunting You

If you live in Florida, you already know mosquitoes are a problem. But what you probably don’t realize is this… they’re not just flying around hoping to get lucky. They’re targeting you.

New research tracking millions of mosquito flight paths shows they’re far more calculated than we thought. They don’t rely on just one signal. They combine multiple things at the same time to find you.

Carbon dioxide from your breath. Your body heat and scent. Even what you’re wearing, especially darker colors.

On their own, those signals don’t do much. But when mosquitoes detect more than one at once, they start circling you, closing in until they land.

And if you’ve ever felt like they go straight for your head, you’re not imagining it. That area gives off a steady stream of carbon dioxide and stands out visually, making it an easy target.

Now put that into a Florida setting. Heat, humidity, standing water, and long summers create the perfect environment for mosquitoes to thrive. Which means you’re not just dealing with more mosquitoes. You’re dealing with better ones.

The upside is this kind of research could lead to smarter traps and better ways to keep them away. But for now, it explains a lot. So next time you step outside and feel like they’re only going after you… You might be right.
