Hot Dogs Belong on Grills, Not in Kennels

Okay. Okay. I...well, we know it's hot.
But while we can run into the AC, jump into a pool, or yell at the sky about this oven we’re currently living in, your pets aren’t that lucky.

And at Hillsborough County’s Pet Resource Center, they’re really feeling the heat. Literally.

With temps breaking 100° on the regular, dozens of adoptable dogs are stuck in outdoor kennels, sweating it out with nowhere to hide from the sun. Shelter staff are doing their best, misters, shade, popsicles (yes, doggy popsicles), but they’re over capacity, and the heat just keeps coming.

So here’s where you come in:
They’re asking for help. Fostering, adoption, even a donation of cooling supplies—anything to give these pups a break from the heat.

Because let’s be honest: if we’re too sweaty to touch our car seats, imagine being wrapped in fur and locked outside with no pool in sight.

Visit Hillsborough County Pet Resources to learn how you can help. Foster, adopt, donate—or even just spread the word. Let’s give these pups a little shade and a lot of love. 🌡️🐶💛

🐠 Ghost Nets, Dead Crabs, and Your Weekend Fishing Plans

Ok, so it turns out our waters have ghosts, and not the fun, pirate-legend kind. We’re talking about “ghost gear,” the lost, abandoned, or straight-up forgotten fishing nets, traps, and lines drifting through the Gulf like invisible death traps. 👻🎣

These derelict hunks of gear keep fishing long after they’ve been ditched, trapping marine life, choking habitats, damaging boats, and messing with our entire coastal vibe.

Here in Southshore, where boating, charters, and waterfront seafood joints are more than just lifestyle choices, they’re part of the economy, this stuff hits hard. If your buddy’s running a fishing charter and half his traps are wrapped up in an underwater crab cage from 1997, guess what? That’s bad for business.

And for the tourists? They didn’t drive from Michigan to kayak into a floating ghost net and ruin their GoPro.

Luckily, there's a solution, and it doesn’t involve diving down there with a flashlight and hope. Through the Fishing for Energy program (shout out to NOAA, Covanta, and friends), fishermen can now ditch old gear responsibly, for free. No more dumping it overboard. No more letting it become the underwater equivalent of lawn litter.

This initiative has already removed over 4 million pounds of gear from U.S. waters. That’s a whole lot of sea-life-saving, boat-motor-protecting, fish-charter-future-securing junk out of our bays.

So next time you see a net tangled in mangroves or a trap washed up near the marina, know this: there’s a way to stop this stuff before it even becomes a problem. And that helps protect not just marine life, but every Southshore family that depends on these waters to earn, explore, and enjoy.
