Labor Day Fashion Faux Pas

Once upon a time in the Gilded Age, a group of very wealthy people looked at the calendar, sighed dramatically, and decided summer was over. Resorts were closing, trunks were packed, and someone said, “White is for lemonade season. City life needs charcoal and navy.” No committee minutes exist, but the message spread like gossip at a garden party. If you wore white after Labor Day, you might as well have announced you did not know which fork to use for salad.

The rule stuck because it was useful. Fashion magazines loved a tidy directive, department stores loved a reason to sell darker clothes, and social climbers loved any code that separated the insiders from the rest of us. If they only knew it would all lead to P Diddy’s white parties. (Oops)

Fast forward to now. Air conditioning exists, sidewalks are not covered in slush for half the year, and the average person owns a washing machine that can defeat a cappuccino spill in under one cycle. Street style ignored the rule years ago, editors waved it off, and every wedding in Miami has a guest in crisp white pants in November. The only people still clinging to the old code are mannequins from 1957 and that one neighbor who also believes socks with sandals are a crime against humanity.

So yes, it’s Labor Day and tomorrow…keep on wearing those white t-shirts and button-ups because down here in Florida, Summer doesn’t stop just because we say so.
