The Holiday Hooplah Has Begun

Holiday season has officially clocked in, and Tampa International is about to look like Target on a Saturday. This year, there’s a little extra turbulence that has nothing to do with the weather. Because of staffing issues on the federal side, some airlines are trimming schedules and moving flights around. That means folks in Southshore are already seeing more delays and a few flights just poof off the board. Not disaster level, but definitely “guess we’re eating airport snacks for dinner now” level.
The timing could not be more classic. Kids coming home from FSU or UF, snowbird grandparents flying in, somebody trying to squeeze in a business trip before the office goes feral for the holidays, and then the airline decides your 2 p.m. flight is now a 10 p.m. maybe. So travel like you’ve done this before. Check your flight before you leave. Get to TIA early. Charge your phone. Have a backup ride and a backup airport plan in case that beautiful nonstop suddenly becomes “connect in Atlanta and hope.”
Here’s the good part. This isn’t all hitting at once. If you give yourself a little wiggle room, you can still get where you’re going, whether that’s Mom’s house, the in-laws, or the relative who cooks like they’re catering Gasparilla. The holidays are still happening. It just might take one extra hour at the airport and one extra coffee from the overpriced kiosk to get there.

Winter Is Coming

Well, looks like our first round of fake winter is upon us. As you’re reading this, you might be sipping some hot cocoa with your fireplace crackling. (Make sure you clean that thing out.) Sixty degrees and windy constitute a blizzard down here.
Most weather reports show temperatures dipping into the 30s on Tuesday with lows in the 40s all week long. It’s time to dust off that “winter” coat and find your only pair of jeans. The flip-flops can stay, though. You’ll see folks bundled up like they’re trekking through the Arctic just to grab their morning coffee, while others are still walking the dog in shorts because “it’s not that bad.” That’s the beauty of Florida’s cold fronts, they confuse us all equally. So enjoy this little taste of winter while it lasts, because by next weekend, we’ll probably be back to sweating through Christmas lights.
