You Might Be From Southshore If

We get it — “Southshore” sounds like a name the developers made up.
But for better or worse, it’s stuck.
As an original Floridian and Apollo Beach native, I’ve watched this town — and the state — morph into something almost unrecognizable from what it was 30 years ago. And while it’s tempting to fight against the tide of change, let’s be honest — it’s exhausting. And probably futile.
So instead, let’s honor what used to be.
Say yes to five of these, and congratulations — you’re an OG.
You still don’t really know what Southshore is
Your last name is Miller, Dickman, Buzbee, Corr, or Mobley
You graduated from East Bay when it was the only high school for 20 miles
You remember the haunted graveyard in Wimauma
You’ve seen the Apollo Beach Preserve get at least five makeovers
You remember the Holiday Inn on Surfside (bonus points if you actually stayed there)
You drove 301 when it was just two lanes and totally empty
You’ve been to the Apollo Beach Dairy Queen
You watched a movie at the Ruskin Drive-In — and you were one of just three cars
What do you remember about the good old days before we were renamed? Let us know in the comments.

You Don’t Have to Fight for Your Right to Party, But You Do Have to Pay

We’ve talked about tipping — and how wild it’s gotten that just showing up warrants an extra payment.
We’ve griped about “service fees” sneaking onto your bill like a raccoon through a dog door.
We’ve even accepted that quality and customer service have taken a sabbatical.
But what I saw last week? That took the cake. Literally.

Do You Even Lift Bro?

Summer is around the corner and it’s probably a good time to start hitting the gym. You know what they say — no pain, no gain.
Unfortunately, it’s not muscles that are claiming the biggest gains around here. It’s the price of groceries.
AROUND TOWN
Southshore Spotlight ![]() Jacob Mobley The Mobley name is as common in Ruskin as mosquitoes — but Jacob Mobley is anything but ordinary. Heading into his senior year at Lennard High, Jacob is ready to lead the Longhorns with a 4.5 GPA and over 3,000 career passing yards. A former basketball player turned quarterback, his arm has helped push Lennard football back over the .500 mark for the first time since 2020. Off the field, he volunteers with youth sports and leads by example. With hopes of playing Division I football, Jacob is a standout student, athlete, and role model. A talented young man from a great local family — keep going, Jacob! | Foodies Only ![]() Tucked in the old MiraBay Winn-Dixie plaza (soon-to-be Aldi), Latitudes is a local favorite. Good food, laid-back vibe, and always a steady buzz — it’s the kind of spot that feels like home. | We Know a Guy…or Girl ![]() Need a painter? A plumber? Someone brave enough to tackle that lightbulb orbiting 30 feet above your living room? We’ve got you. |
