Dress Code: Not So Fast

After widespread parent backlash, the Hillsborough County School Board is considering reversing its new leggings dress code just days before students return to class

Just a few days ago, we told you about Hillsborough County's updated student dress code and the growing petition asking the district to reconsider parts of it. Well, things have moved quickly.

The School Board is now considering reversing one of the most talked-about changes before students even return to class: the new rule requiring leggings and spandex to be covered by a shirt or other clothing extending to at least mid-thigh. The move comes after a wave of emails, phone calls, public comments, and petition signatures from parents who argued the rule was unnecessary and placed an unfair burden on families.

The other dress code changes, including the ban on pajamas, requirements for shorts, skirts and dresses to reach mid-thigh, restrictions on face coverings except for religious or approved medical reasons, and the prohibition on spiked jewelry, do not appear to be part of the proposed reconsideration at this time.

When we covered the story on Monday, we noted that opinions tended to split after the pajama ban. That prediction turned out to be pretty accurate. While some parents applauded the district for trying to create a more consistent dress code, the leggings requirement quickly became the lightning rod, dominating conversations across social media and prompting a swift response from district leaders.

Whatever side of the debate you're on, there's one positive takeaway: parents made their voices heard, and the School Board listened. That's how the process is supposed to work.

Now here's hoping we see that same level of engagement when the conversation turns to reading proficiency, math scores, classroom discipline, attendance, and preparing students for life after graduation.

Because if an entire county can rally around yoga pants in less than a week, imagine what could happen if we brought that same energy to education itself.

Prepare Now, Not When the Storm Is Here

Hillsborough County urges residents with medical needs to register now for special needs shelters and emergency transportation before hurricane season intensifies

We've all seen how quickly hurricane season can go from "we'll keep an eye on it" to standing in line for supplies and watching weather updates every hour.

That's why Hillsborough County is asking residents with medical or functional needs to prepare now, not when a storm is already headed our way. Officials are encouraging anyone who depends on oxygen, dialysis, electrically powered medical equipment, mobility assistance, or other ongoing medical care to pre-register for the county's Special Needs Shelter Program and transportation assistance before an emergency happens.

Pre-registering helps emergency officials plan for the number of people who may need medical support, transportation, electricity for life-sustaining equipment, and accessible shelter space if evacuations become necessary. It's also one less thing to worry about when everyone else is rushing to prepare.

If you have a parent, grandparent, neighbor, or friend who might qualify, now is a good time to check in with them. A five-minute conversation today could make a big difference if Southshore finds itself in the path of a storm later this season.

A Southshore Legend Still Serving the Classics

Foodie Friday is back, and we're kicking it off with one of Southshore's true local legends: Ybor Grille.

Some restaurants become institutions because they've been around forever. Others earn that title because they consistently deliver. Ybor Grille has managed to do both. Even under new ownership, they've stayed true to the recipes and flavors that have made them a local favorite for years.

Yesterday we stopped in for two Tampa classics: the Devil Crab and the Papa Rellena (stuffed potato). The verdict? Yes, Chef... and more, please.

The Devil Crab was absolutely packed with seasoned crab filling. This wasn't one of those mostly-breading versions. It was stuffed with meat from edge to edge, with just enough crispy coating to hold it all together. The Papa Rellena was perfectly crisp on the outside with flavorful seasoned beef inside.

Then came the surprise MVP: their house-made chimichurri dipping sauce. We weren't expecting it, but after one bite we were looking for excuses to dip everything in it. It paired so well with both dishes that we may or may not have been tempted to ask for a cup to take home.

Ybor Grille has become one of our regular lunch spots, and if you've never been, it's well worth adding to your rotation. Whether you're craving a Cuban sandwich, Devil Crab, ropa vieja, or just some good old-fashioned Tampa comfort food, it's hard to leave disappointed.
