A reminder about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries

If your house is filled with modern tech, this story is worth a minute of your time. A recent house fire in Dade City was caused by malfunctioning lithium-ion batteries stored in a garage, according to Pasco County Fire Rescue. No injuries were reported, but it’s a reminder that the same batteries powering our everyday lives can become dangerous under the wrong conditions, and apparently cause Elon to lose a few pennies along the way.
Officials haven’t released which specific device ignited the fire. But as a Tesla owner, lithium-ion battery fires always make me pay attention. That said, this isn’t just about electric vehicles. Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere. Phones, laptops, tablets, power tools, electric bikes, scooters, backup battery packs, and those devices quietly charging in the garage overnight all use the same technology.
Most of the time, these batteries are perfectly safe. Problems tend to pop up when batteries are damaged, overheated, charged improperly, or stored in tight spaces surrounded by flammable materials. Suddenly, that cluttered garage becomes more than just an eyesore. On that note, we do know a girl. Square One Garage Solutions.
Fire officials recommend a few simple habits that can go a long way. Use manufacturer-approved chargers. Unplug devices once they’re fully charged. Avoid charging batteries in enclosed or cluttered areas. Replace any battery that looks swollen or gets unusually hot. If a battery starts acting suspicious, it’s not being dramatic. It’s trying to tell you something.
The good news is that fires like this are often preventable. A few small changes in how and where we charge our devices can help keep Southshore homes safer. With enough to worry about during hurricane season, battery safety is one thing we can actually control.

Another Cheesy Story
See what I Did There?

If your fridge is usually stocked with a few go-to cheeses, this is one of those stories worth a quick check. Health officials have expanded a cheese recall after routine testing found contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. Some of the affected products were sold in Florida, including grated Pecorino Romano cheeses from several popular brands.
This recall was classified at the highest risk level, meaning there’s a reasonable chance the product could cause serious illness if consumed. Anyone who has purchased the recalled cheese should not eat it and should throw it away or return it to the store for a refund.
Listeria isn’t your average food bug. While healthy adults may experience mild symptoms, it can be especially dangerous for pregnant people, older adults, young children, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can take time to appear, which makes checking your fridge now a smart move, especially if you’ve bought grated cheese recently.
For Southshore households, this is a good reminder to take a quick look through the cheese drawer before tonight’s dinner. If you find any of the recalled products, skip the taste test and toss it. This is one situation where curiosity is not worth it.
