Keeping Southshore Seniors Safe with Smart Cancer Care

The USF College of Nursing is developing a new telemedicine program to support adults 65 and older who are taking oral cancer medications. The platform, called GOALHealth, is designed to make cancer care easier to manage from home.

The system includes medication reminders, symptom tracking, and alerts that let users know when it's time to contact a doctor. It’s built with seniors in mind, featuring large text, simple navigation, and easy-to-understand language.

The program is currently in testing and is expected to roll out more widely in the coming months. It’s a big step forward in making sure older adults can safely and confidently manage their treatment without unnecessary hospital visits.

💧 You Can’t Outrun a Leak

Why Your Pipes Might Be Plotting Against You

Let’s be honest, when most of us think about plumbing, it’s usually after something goes terribly wrong.

Like when your toilet starts gurgling like it’s possessed.
Or your shower suddenly becomes a foot spa you didn’t ask for.
Or worse, when your water heater gives up mid-shampoo and you’re left questioning every life choice.

But here in Southshore, those “oops” moments can get real expensive, real fast—especially with storm season back on our doorstep.

🌀 Storm Season = Stress Season (for Your Pipes)

The rain’s coming. The ground gets soggy. Your pipes shift. Tree roots stretch out like they just did hot yoga. Your sewer line groans under the pressure of every neighborhood flush.

In other words, your plumbing is going through it—and unfortunately, it’s not going to text you a heads-up when it’s about to break.

Ruskin’s Utopian Experiment

Part 2: The Ashes of Ruskin College

In 1918, disaster struck. Ruskin College, the heart of the community, went up in flames. No known cause. Some whispered sabotage, others said a jealous neighbor wanted the land. Whatever the truth, the college was gone, and with it, the colony’s dream. Families moved away. The community unraveled. But something about the land stayed charged, heavy with memory.

And then, decades later, a child digging behind a barn uncovered a time capsule, with a letter postmarked… 2022.

When Your Morning Commute Becomes a Parking Lot

Picture this: You’re sipping your coffee, ready to bravely face another bumper‑to‑bumper slog on your commute. You inch forward, wave at the same stoplight you waved to five minutes ago, and wonder if your car has suddenly become part of roadside scenery.

Well, Hillsborough County heard your sighs. They're dusting off their corridor planning goggles to prep for traffic growth through 2070. That’s right, your grandkids might someday cruise through here without feeling like they’re parked on purpose.

They’ve organized public meetings from July 8–22 (yes, even at SouthShore Regional Library!), so you can point out where the roads need a little extra elbow room or suggest trade‑offs (bike lanes vs. more lanes?).

Why now? The county hasn’t updated its Corridor Preservation Plan in 15 years, and with population heading toward 2.5 million, it's time to rethink whether humble two‑laners should become four‑ or six‑laners, or maybe roundabouts sprinkled in for flair.

So, next time you’re stuck at the Big Bend and 301 mad dash, just remember: someone up there is mapping the future. Drop in, share where traffic gives you gray hairs, and help shape the highways your pets might one day travel on.

Because if we plan ahead, one day that tortoise‑pace commute might… actually move.
