🎭 Elmo Might Be Fine, But WEDU’s Feeling the Cuts

Our local PBS station, WEDU, is facing a $2.8 million funding shortfall, thanks to recent federal and state budget cuts. In June, Congress kicked off the chaos by voting to slash over $1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and both the House and Senate backed it. Now WEDU, like many PBS stations, is scrambling to fill the gap.

What’s at risk? Everything from local programming delays to cutbacks in national content. And yes, they’re even considering airing high school sports to make ends meet.

This isn’t just about losing our favorite documentaries, over half of U.S. kids don’t have access to preschool, and for many, PBS is their first real classroom. That’s a big loss for a lot of little learners.

The team at WEDU isn’t giving up, but they are getting creative. If you love public media, the kind that teaches, inspires, and doesn’t scream at you with ads every 30 seconds, now might be the time to show a little love.

Because without PBS, who’s going to tell us our grandma’s cookie jar is worth $12,000?

The 2025 Active Life Games Are Coming

If you thought competition ended after 40, clearly you’ve never seen a 72-year-old throw down in shuffleboard.

The 2025 Active Life Games are back, and adults 50 and up across Hillsborough County are gearing up for two weeks of friendly competition, bragging rights, and maybe a pulled hamstring or two. Running Sept. 29 to Oct. 10, events range from track and field to billiards, pickleball, horseshoes, and more.

Whether you're in it to win or just to make some new friends, there’s something for every skill and fitness level. Registration is $25 for one event or $35 for unlimited, with an optional $35 golf fee (cart included, of course).

Opening ceremonies kick off Sept. 29 at Barksdale Senior Center, and the games wrap up Oct. 10 at Victor Crist Community Center.

It’s all about movement, fun, and proving that age really is just a number. For more info or to register, visit:
