Gators, Snakes, Now Lions: Florida’s 2025 Lionfish Challenge Begins

They’re venomous. They’re invasive. And now… they’re on the menu.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) just launched its 2025 Lionfish Challenge, and they want you—yes, you with the snorkel and weekend scuba habit—to help rid Florida’s waters of this prickly predator.
What’s the deal?
Lionfish aren’t native to Florida, but they’ve made themselves a little too comfortable on our reefs. With no natural predators and a voracious appetite, they’re wreaking havoc on native fish populations. That’s where this summer-long tournament comes in.
From May 24 to September 14, divers across the state will compete to remove as many lionfish as possible. There are two divisions:
🟢 Recreational divers submit lionfish tails at designated checkpoints
⚫ Commercial divers submit sales tickets for harvested lionfish
What’s in it for you?
Aside from saving the reef, participants are competing for some serious underwater street cred:
🏆 Lionfish King or Queen
🏆 Commercial Champion
...and of course, eternal bragging rights.
FWC has set up checkpoints all over South Florida—including in Miami, Pompano, Deerfield, Fort Lauderdale, Key Largo, Key West, Boca Raton, and Jupiter. So if you’re heading south this summer, bring your spear and help clean up the coastline.
The more lionfish you catch, the more chances you have to climb the leaderboard—and maybe even snag a few prizes.
Want to get involved?

So grab your gear, sharpen your aim, and remember: there’s nothing like a little friendly competition... unless it involves a venomous fish.
