It should come as no surprise to anyone that I'm a writer. Actually, we’re all writers here, and nothing makes any of us happier than when people fall in love with reading. After all, books are where they hide the information.

So when we heard about a local program helping kids discover the magic tucked between the covers of a book, we couldn’t help but root for it—pun fully intended.

It’s called SEEDS (Sowing Early Emotional Development Supports), and it’s taking root in Hillsborough thanks to the Children’s Board. But this isn’t your typical "read this, now spell that" setup. SEEDS sends trained reading coaches into homes to do more than teach letters—they build confidence, encourage connection, and help kids fall head over heels for storytime.

And it’s working.

Whether it's a picture book about talking animals or a tale of space-faring dinosaurs (please someone write that), these kids are learning to decode more than just words. They’re learning to express themselves, connect with others, and grow into little thinkers and future readers of The Southshore Circle, of course.

The letter listed names no one recognized, but its message was clear: “We are not done.” Researchers thought it was a prank.
