Something You Don’t Think About Every Day

If you’re anything like me, your ceiling fan only goes one way and is always on high. Summer, winter, fall. Doesn’t matter. I need air circulating overhead at all times. You know your home is truly in Florida when your ceiling fan works harder than half the characters in The Real Housewives of Tampa Bay. But it does more than stir up a hair-raising breeze. It has a secret talent: it can change seasons. All it needs is for you to flip that tiny switch you forgot existed.

Right now, most fans spin counterclockwise to push cooler air down and keep the electric bill from committing crimes. That’s perfect for summer when stepping outside feels like hugging a hot sponge. Once our Florida winter shows up in fifteen-minute bursts, cold air sinks to the floor while warm air hides near the ceiling like a stubborn teenager. Reverse your fan to spin clockwise on low and you’ll gently pull that warmth back into the room without blasting anyone in the face. Energy saved. Toasty toes achieved.

With the fake cold front on its way, it’s almost time to grab a step stool and flip the switch. Your fan might look confused, but deep down, it will know it’s living a purpose-filled life. And that’s a friendly tip from the folks at The Southshore Circle, keeping you informed, one blade spin at a time.

More Than A Scary Story

As you probably already know, I love Halloween. It’s more than a time to get dressed up and watch scary movies, for me, it’s a whole vibe. Not to mention it pretty much kicks off the season when I can check the mail and actually make it back without being drenched in sweat.

But, there’s more to it than candy and fake cobwebs. The roots trace back to the ancient Celtic festival called Samhain, when the people living in what’s now Ireland and Scotland believed the boundary between the living and the spirit world got a little fuzzy. On October 31, they marked the end of the harvest and prepared for the darkness ahead. So, naturally, they lit bonfires and wore costumes to keep things spooky and safe.

Later, when Christianity spread across Europe, the church set November 1 as All Saints’ Day (also called All Hallows). The evening before became All Hallows’ Eve, which soon evolved into the Halloween we know. Over time, traditions mixed: costumes became playful, spirits became candy treats, and neighborhoods turned into walking candy-halls.

Here in Southshore, we get to embrace the fun of Halloween with all its weird roots and modern flair. Costumes, decorations, spooky gatherings, and yes, all the candy. But it pays to know that it’s a bit more than a time for mischief. So go ahead, light up those jack-o-lanterns, don your most creative costume, and celebrate with the knowledge that you’re part of something centuries old and totally festive.

Southshore Spotlight

Joshua Way of Hope is a Tampa nonprofit turning loss into lasting change by honoring Joshua Nichols, a high-achieving young professional whose bright light was dimmed far too soon. Their mission is to lift youth and families at risk of poverty, health disparities, and system involvement. Their vision is for kids to grow into emotionally strong, educated, healthy, and financially independent adults.

They do the work on the ground through programs that meet kids where they are. Little Achievers for pre-K–2, Achievers for grades 3–8, Life Skills 360 Training Institute, and Building a Stronger Me, combining academics, behavior coaching, character development, and family advocacy. If you want impact that feels close to home, support here translates into mentors, skills, and real opportunities for the youth in our community.
