Help Is On The Way
Big news for Tampa Bay drivers—THEA (the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority) just approved a $752 million work plan to expand the Selmon Expressway, which saw a record 270,000 daily cars in 2024, 10,000 more than the previous year.
What’s in store:
A new lane each way on the South Selmon Corridor (from the Hillsborough River to Gandy Blvd)
Fresh ramps at Whiting Street to ease traffic downtown and reduce backups at Channelside
Early planning for an extension toward US 301 and better tech—including traffic cameras and wrong‑way detection
Construction is set to begin next year. The goal? Faster, safer, more reliable commutes, especially for our Southshore and Brandon neighbors.

Ruskin’s Utopian Experiment
Part 1: A Dream in The Swamp
They came with books, blueprints, and belief. In 1908, a group of idealists stepped off the train and began building something unheard of in southern Hillsborough County: a cooperative colony. Named Ruskin after the British social reformer, the settlement ran on shared labor, mutual aid, and self-governance. Every student worked half the day and studied the other half. No one was above another. It wasn’t just a town, it was a vision for how the world could be.
But perfect systems break in imperfect hands, and fire doesn’t care about philosophy.
