Southshore Circle Snipes

Cruise For Two

The Southshore Circle Snipes program starts next week. Our team will be out and about every month, quietly picking up the tab at your favorite local spots. Lunch. Dinner. Breakfast. If you’re in Southshore, you might get sniped with a free meal. So, be on the lookout… but we’re a stealthy bunch. By the time you notice us, you’ve probably already been sniped.

Next month, our big giveaway will be a cruise for two. More details coming soon, but we’re thinking a scavenger hunt might decide who wins this one.

I’ve also been brushing up on my rock, paper, scissors skills. Follow us on Facebook to find out where you can challenge me for a free lunch.

Featured Story

The Apollo Beach Glow Up

Apollo Beach is growing fast, but many residents aren’t thrilled with what’s coming

First came The Yard. Then the Walmart plaza and now a host of new businesses are set to open soon, but everyone in the area isn’t so happy. And it’s easy to see why.

Let’s start with the obvious. The Yard was hailed as the new “hot spot” for Southshore, but it tends to get overlooked way too often. There’s a cluster of trendy places there, like pilates or a doggy spa, and some different spots to eat, like poke bowls or Rock N Roll Sushi. But The Yard still doesn’t feel like the meeting spot for the town.

A trendy martini bar would honestly go well there, or a semi-upscale restaurant like a Cooper’s Hawk. You can only make so many fast casual places before it starts to feel like more of the same.

Now, for the elephant in the room, Walmart is not Target.

After years of whispers of malls, great shopping plazas, and whatever else they promised to get half a million people down here, Walmart feels more like a consolation prize. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to have a Wally World down the street, but they really could’ve made the area something special instead of plopping the same anchor chain in the middle of everything.

With a Chase on the way, a Panda Express (apparently the area hates this), a Greyson, a Tada’s Kitchen (apparently the area loves this) and a few other places diving in, residents are voicing opinions that aren’t all that happy.

From 40,000 feet, it might look like Southshore is finally getting some variety, but down on the street level, it’s starting to feel like more of the same.

There have been posts and talks of a new plaza coming to the area off Big Bend, but anyone who has been a resident for a decade plus can tell you, don’t count your chickens until they’re open and you’ve shopped there.

So that’s where things stand right now. Growth is coming. New spots are opening. More is on the way. But the question is whether it’s actually what people were hoping for.

What do you think? Are we getting what Southshore needs, or does it feel like a missed opportunity?

Storm Season Is Never Far in Southshore

Storm season becomes a distant memory every year just as soon as we toss the shutters back in the garage. But around here, preparation is everything.

If you ask me, forecasts are about as reliable as a used car's 30-day warranty. But if you’re into that sort of thing, 2026 is projected to have around 13 named storms. The average is 14, but as we all know, it only takes one.

So what can you do right now? Start planning. Start saving. Two years ago, way too many people were caught off guard. The rush for generators, water, and flashlights had stores looking like the opening scene of a disaster movie. And what things looked like the day after the storm hit… that’s a whole different story.

But that only tells half of it. Roof damage. Flooding. Insurance claims. Repairs that dragged on for months… some people are still dealing with it. So start now.

Pick up an extra case of water when you’re at the store. Grab supplies little by little. At this point, if you’ve lived in Florida long enough, you already know what you should have on hand year-round.

But one of the biggest things you can do? Check your insurance. Know what’s covered. Know what’s not. Because finding out after the fact is about the worst time possible.

Lucky for you, we know a guy.

David Castelwitz with Most Insurance is the kind of person who actually wants to dig into policies and make sure you’re covered the right way. If you want a quote or just want someone to take a look and make sure you’re not exposed, he’s worth reaching out to.

And even if you don’t call him, call someone. Because the last thing you want is to find out you’re underinsured while you’re watching your life float away in a storm surge.

The Ocean Current That Could Change Everything

Sometimes the biggest stories aren’t the loudest ones. They’re the ones happening quietly in the background that could eventually impact all of us.

Scientists are raising new concerns about a massive ocean current system called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC. It’s a key part of how heat moves around the planet, helping regulate weather patterns across North America, Europe, and beyond.

Here’s the problem. New research suggests it may be weakening faster than expected, and potentially heading toward a tipping point. If that happens, the effects wouldn’t stay in the ocean.

We’re talking shifting weather patterns, rising sea levels along parts of the U.S., and disruptions to agriculture and water systems around the world. (Pretty sure I wrote a book about that 😃 ) And yes, that includes Florida.

A weaker system could contribute to rising sea levels along the East Coast and change rainfall patterns, which could impact everything from storm intensity to flooding risk over time. Now to be clear, this isn’t something happening overnight. But it is something scientists are watching much more closely than before. And it’s a reminder of how connected everything really is.
