Storm Season in the Southshore
History, Mystery, and Hurricane Prep
Southshore Story TimeThe Town The River Swallowed Part 1 Riverview is a well-known town now—booming with new businesses, housing developments, and bright-eyed families all chasing their piece of the American dream. But before Riverview, there was Peru—an old Florida settlement tucked along the southern banks of the Alafia River. And its story is anything but cheery. There were no traffic lights. No subdivisions. Just dirt paths, handmade tools, and a town built by calloused hands and whispered prayers. The river wasn’t a view—it was life. It gave fish, brought trade, and sometimes took too much during the rainy season. But the people stayed. They built their lives on muddy banks and raised generations without complaint. Then came the whispers—something sinister brewing across the water. No one said it aloud. But one by one, families began to vanish. And then one day… everything changed. | ![]() |

🌀 Hurricane Season Is Here—What We’ve Learned, What’s Changed, and How to Prepare

The 2025 hurricane season officially began yesterday, and after the pounding storms of last year, officials across Tampa Bay are making it clear: we’ve learned some hard lessons—and it’s time to act on them.
🚨 Rescue Upgrades and Power Fixes
Last season, over 100 water rescues were performed in Tampa alone. In response, Tampa Fire Rescue and Tampa Police have rolled out two new SHERP all-terrain vehicles—built specifically for high-water rescues, whether it’s people or pets that need saving.
Power outages were another major pain point, especially after Hurricane Milton. This year, TECO says it’s enhanced its outage map tech to handle peak usage, and it’s now offering mobile training for out-of-state crews who may be called in for help.
At Port Tampa Bay, fuel distribution delays during last season's storms led to a renewed focus on resiliency. Private terminals are now working with the port to safeguard equipment and ensure quicker recovery if the grid goes down again.
💧 When One Drain Backs Up, a Neighborhood Floods
One of the most overlooked dangers last year wasn’t the storm itself—it was the stormwater. Flooded neighborhoods across Tampa revealed just how fragile and connected the region’s drainage systems are.
Since then, crews have cleared over 500 tons of debris, cleaned out ponds and drains, raised wastewater pumps, and secured backup generators to keep things flowing—even when the skies open up.
🧰 It Starts at Home
While officials are stepping up, it won’t matter if we don’t do our part. With the season officially underway, now is the time to make sure your home—and your health—are hurricane-ready.
This week, we’re shining the spotlight on our Title Sponsors, who are helping Southshore families prepare from the roof down:
🏠 Steadfast Roofing
It sounds obvious—but roofing is often the most overlooked part of storm prep. And the middle of a Category 4 is a bad time to find out you’ve got a leak or your contractor did a half-price job, but charged you double.
Avoid joining the blue tarp club. Steadfast Roofing offers quality inspections and reinforcements to keep your home protected when it matters most.
🚪 Square One Garage Solutions
Your garage might not be top-of-mind during a storm—but it should be. From protecting valuable storage to finding that elusive box of flashlights in the dark, being organized can make a world of difference.
Square One Garage Solutions can help you get storm-ready and clutter-free before the next system rolls in.
💪 Wellness Vitalized
When prepping your home, don’t forget to prep yourself. Storm season brings stress, disruption, and exhaustion.
Wellness Vitalized can keep your body in peak shape with everything from lab services and weight loss management to IV hydration and peptide therapy—so you can stay energized, even when the power’s out.
✅ What’s Already Happened—and What Comes Next
If you missed Tampa Fire Rescue’s Hurricane Preparedness Expo on May 31, don’t worry. While the sandbags may be gone, the message stands: The best time to prepare is before the storm hits.
From your roof to your garage to your overall health, every detail matters when it comes to storm prep. Southshore has weathered hard seasons before—but we’re also known for stepping up before things get bad.
So check your supplies. Make your plan. And if you haven’t already—start now.
