Hillsborough schools launch summer program for teens looking to get on the road

If you’ve got a teenager ready to get behind the wheel, now’s the time to start paying attention.
Hillsborough County Public Schools has opened registration for its summer driver’s education program, giving students ages 15 to 18 the chance to complete training while school is out.
Now, I’m not in a rush to share the summer roads with a bunch of teens, but as a parent with new drivers myself, I’m all for as much training as possible. With more drivers on the road every year and more congestion across Southshore, getting proper training early matters. Not just for convenience, but for safety.
And as an aside, more teen drivers probably means fewer of them popping wheelies on e-bikes down the middle of the road. But that’s a story for another day… and one we’ve probably beaten to the ground.
So if getting a license is on the horizon in your household, this is one of those deadlines you don’t want to miss.
Because once spots are gone, they’re gone.

County Commission Control
Commissioners consider expanding Tampa’s county seat designation while approving millions in local infrastructure funding

There’s a meeting happening today that most people won’t think twice about, but it’s one of those agendas that touches a little bit of everything, and a lot of it hits close to home for Southshore.
Here’s what commissioners are looking at:
A proposal to expand the county seat designation beyond Tampa to include the entire county
A major disaster recovery housing program totaling over $200 million
A funding increase for the Gibsonton septic-to-sewer project
Additional land use and development planning items across Hillsborough County
On its own, the county seat discussion sounds technical, and in many ways it is. It’s largely symbolic and wouldn’t change boundaries or day-to-day governance. But the fact that it’s even being considered reflects a shift that Southshore residents already feel. Growth isn’t centered in Tampa anymore. It’s happening in Riverview, Ruskin, Wimauma, and Apollo Beach, and county leadership is starting to acknowledge that reality.
For Southshore, the bigger impact comes from the funding and infrastructure pieces. The septic-to-sewer investment in Gibsonton is part of a broader push to modernize systems that were never built for the level of growth we’re seeing today. Projects like this directly affect water quality, future development, and long-term sustainability in the area.
The housing funding also matters locally. As more people move into Southshore, affordability and recovery programs become a bigger part of the conversation, especially in areas still feeling the effects of past storms and rising costs.
If the county seat proposal advances, it’s not final. It would still need to go through multiple public hearings. But taken together, today’s agenda tells a bigger story. Southshore isn’t just growing, it’s forcing the county to rethink how it operates, where it invests, and what the future of Hillsborough County actually looks like.

Closing in on The Fountain of Youth

If you’ve ever wished you could turn back the clock, you might not be as far off as you think. A growing wave of scientists and researchers is shifting the conversation around aging from something we simply accept… to something we might actually be able to control.
We’re not talking about better skincare or another supplement promising miracles. This is deeper than that. Researchers are now using AI to track how our bodies age at the cellular level, identifying patterns that can predict how fast we’re aging biologically, not just based on how many birthdays we’ve had. At the same time, new drugs are being developed that don’t just treat diseases, but target aging itself as the root cause.
Instead of asking how we treat cancer, heart disease, or Alzheimer’s after they show up, scientists are starting to ask if slowing aging could delay or prevent them altogether. And it’s not some fringe idea anymore.
The field of longevity research is quickly becoming one of the biggest emerging industries in the world, with projections putting it in the trillions. Major companies, startups, and research labs are all racing toward the same goal… helping people live longer, healthier lives.
There’s still a long road between lab results and real-world impact. But for the first time, the idea of extending not just lifespan, but healthspan, how long we stay healthy, is starting to feel less like science fiction and more like something within reach.
So no, we haven’t found the fountain of youth, yet. But science may well be on its way to creating it.
Southshore Spotlight

If you’ve ever thought success in school was just about academics, this local nonprofit is working to change that. Frameworks of Tampa Bay focuses on emotional intelligence, helping students build skills like self-awareness, decision-making, and healthy relationships through hands-on programs.
Because the reality is, kids aren’t born knowing how to handle stress or pressure. But those skills can be taught. And when they are, the impact goes far beyond the classroom.
