Summer is Closing In

School’s almost out, the traffic’s about to change, and Southshore is officially heading into summer mode

I don’t really care what the “official” start of summer is. When all the kids are out of school, summer starts. And around here, this is the last week before that happens. Some of you may have had kids who graduated this year. Congratulations! Others might have kids with no exams, and they’ve been out of school since last week. But the real summer starts Monday.

Prepare yourselves for mornings with great traffic. Afternoons with crowded restaurants. Evenings that go on forever, as the sound of kids playing reminds us what it’s like to live carefree.

There’s a lot to do this summer, and we’ll do our best to keep you up to date on what Southshore has going on for the folk that don’t have to work. But summer jobs are an option too.

Pool days are about to become daily routines. Weekend cookouts will somehow turn into Tuesday cookouts. Boats will be packed at the ramps before sunrise, and half of Southshore will suddenly remember they “need” a golf cart.

Parents are preparing for three straight months of hearing, “I’m bored,” while simultaneously wondering where all the groceries disappeared to.

And somewhere between the thunderstorms, beach trips, snow cones, fireworks, and late-night ice cream runs, another Southshore summer will quietly make memories we’ll all talk about years from now.

So buckle up. Summer is closing in.

The Summer of Scams

From fake deputies to crypto traps, scammers are turning up the heat on Floridians this summer

Summer is here. The kids are out of school, people are traveling more, hurricane season is creeping in, and unfortunately, scam season is heating up too.

A Tampa man recently lost hundreds of dollars after scammers convinced him he was speaking with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The scammers claimed he had missed a court appearance, sent fake legal documents with his personal information on them, and pressured him into depositing money into a Bitcoin ATM to avoid arrest. And that’s the scary part.

These aren’t the obvious scams people joke about anymore. Modern scammers are organized, polished, patient, and incredibly believable. Some use fake caller IDs that appear official. Others create forged documents, fake websites, AI-generated voices, or even background police radio chatter to make everything sound real.

Florida continues to be one of the biggest scam targets in the country, especially involving cryptocurrency, fake law enforcement calls, online marketplaces, and fraudulent investment schemes targeting older adults.

And around Southshore, where many families have older relatives nearby or retirees living independently, that’s something worth paying attention to. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says legitimate law enforcement agencies will never demand payment through Bitcoin, gift cards, Venmo, Cash App, or wire transfers.

So if somebody calls demanding money immediately while threatening arrest or legal trouble, slow down. Call a family member. Call the agency directly.
And remember that panic is usually the scammer’s greatest weapon.

Because this summer, the heat isn’t the only thing trying to take your money.

No seriously.

Scientists and biotech companies are officially manufacturing medicine in space, which sounds less like modern healthcare and more like the opening scene of a sci-fi movie.

A UK-based biotech company recently launched a drug manufacturing lab to the International Space Station with the goal of growing ultra-pure drug crystals in microgravity. Why? Because making medicine in space may actually produce higher-quality treatments than manufacturing them here on Earth. One of the first focuses is cancer treatment.

Researchers say the zero-gravity environment allows crystals used in certain injectable drugs to form more cleanly and uniformly, potentially creating medications that are more stable, more effective, and easier for patients to use at home instead of spending hours attached to IVs in hospitals. The future may involve medicines designed and manufactured... in orbit.

And while this all sounds futuristic, it also highlights something bigger happening right now. Space is rapidly becoming commercialized. It’s no longer just governments launching rockets. Private companies are now building space stations, manufacturing technology in orbit, and preparing for an economy that could eventually exist partially above Earth itself.

So yes, while you were paying your electric bill this week, humanity quietly took another step toward becoming a full-blown sci-fi civilization. 🚀
