🌿 Keep It Green—Without Going Too Green

Southshore, we love a lush lawn, but if you’re fertilizing this summer, pump the brakes. From June 1 to Sept. 30, Hillsborough County bans fertilizers with nitrogen or phosphorus. Why? Because summer rains wash all that “grow juice” straight into our waterways, fueling algae blooms that wreck our ponds, rivers, and beaches.

Here’s the deal:

  • Check your fertilizer label—if the first or second number isn’t zero, don’t use it.

  • Keep fertilizer away from storm drains, sidewalks, and driveways.

  • Potassium or iron-based mixes? Still fair game.

Ignoring the rules could cost you $500 and a whole lot of side-eye from the manatees.

Let’s keep our grass respectable, our water clear, and our fines non-existent.
Stay green, Southshore, but play it smart.

It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to…The Summer

Well, Southshore… this is it. The last official week of summer for most families before backpacks start bulging, alarm clocks start shrieking, and the slow shuffle into the school year begins.

It’s been a scorcher—so hot even the lizards were looking for shade. But now it’s time to swap sunscreen for spiral notebooks, dig out the pencils (or just buy more), and track down the trendiest outfits your kids will insist are “required” for hallway credibility.

Soon, the halls will be buzzing with back-to-school bravado. Pep rallies will crank up, football will take over Fridays, and let’s be honest, traffic is about to get very real. (Friendly reminder: school zones are back in play. So maybe don’t test your luck.)

Sure, we’re a little sad to see summer go. The beach days, the backyard grilling, the "we'll do it tomorrow" mindset. But here in Southshore, summer is more than a season, it’s a state of mind. The palm trees stay standing, the sunsets still slap, and let’s face it... someone’s always on vacation.

So grab that last snow cone, crank the AC, and get ready to strut through the school year with confidence. Southshore’s still got summer in its soul.
