School is almost back, traffic is about to return, and South Shore is settling into its busiest season of the year

Even if you don't have kids, this one matters. This is the last week before public schools across South Shore are back in session. What does that mean? A lot of last-minute school shopping. Open houses. New schedules. Parents wondering where that supply list disappeared to. Traffic... and then some more traffic. All culminating in a flood of first-day-of-school photos hitting your Facebook feed a week from Monday.

As if that wasn't enough, the county seemed determined not to let us enjoy a traffic-free summer by kicking off road work on what feels like every major road at the exact same time. With school traffic returning, construction projects still underway, and the One Water project continuing to reshape our daily commute, our advice is simple: leave a little earlier than you think you need to.

It's not all bad news, though. Education matters, and hopefully the county settles the great leggings debate before students head back to class. Our sports section has been a little bleak lately, so we're more than ready for Friday night lights, marching bands, and the return of high school football. As for that crisp fall air everyone keeps talking about... let's be honest. We've probably got another four months of high 80s and mid-90s before Florida gets that memo.

For many South Shore families, this school year marks something much bigger than the first day of class. It's a first year of kindergarten. A senior's last first day. The first year with an empty nest. Parent-teacher conferences, school plays, football games, science fairs, concerts, and all the little moments that become lifelong memories.

School is about more than classrooms and homework. It's when the rhythm of the community returns. The buses are back, the sports fields come alive, neighborhood routines settle in, and South Shore starts feeling like South Shore again. And if none of that gets you excited... consider this your official countdown to pumpkin spice season.

The Lightning Thief Gives Back

TECO customers will see lower electric bills this month as a temporary storm surcharge comes to an early end

After what has felt like an endless run of high electric bills, Tampa Electric is finally giving customers a little relief. Beginning this month, TECO customers will see lower electric bills as the utility removes its temporary storm recovery surcharge earlier than expected. For the average household using about 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each month, that means savings of roughly $20 per month.

The surcharge was put in place to help cover the cost of restoring power after the historic 2024 hurricane season. Since those costs were recovered ahead of schedule, the extra charge is coming off your bill sooner than originally planned.

No, this probably isn't the moment where you'll start cranking the thermostat down to 58 degrees just because you can. But with grocery prices, insurance premiums, and just about everything else still climbing, it's nice to see one monthly bill finally headed in the right direction.

We'll call it a small victory... and maybe, just maybe, the Lightning Thief is giving a little back.

Manatee County residents rallied together and convinced county leaders to hit pause on a proposed mega sports complex

Every once in a while, a community reminds you that showing up still matters. Our neighbors to the south in Manatee County just managed to hit the pause button on a proposed mega sports complex after residents packed meetings and voiced concerns over traffic, noise, and whether the location was the right fit. Rather than moving forward, county commissioners directed staff to explore alternative locations for the project. Sound familiar?

Here in South Shore, we've had plenty of conversations about growth, traffic, infrastructure, and projects that seem to move forward long before residents feel like they've been heard. Whether it's another housing development, a road project, or major infrastructure, it often feels like the bulldozers arrive before the conversation does.

Now, to be fair, we're not saying every project should be stopped. Sports complexes can bring tourism, jobs, and economic activity. But Manatee County showed something worth paying attention to. Residents organized, showed up, and made enough noise that county leaders decided to slow down and take another look. Maybe that's the lesson.

Whether you're for a project or against it, local government works best when the people it represents actually participate. Our neighbors just proved that a room full of engaged residents can sometimes accomplish more than a thousand frustrated Facebook comments.
