Remember Milton? It’s Almost Been One Year, And That’s Not Good News

Tick tock, Southshore. If Milton dinged your roof, fence, soffits, or ceilings, the clock is almost out. Florida gives you one year from the date of loss to file your first hurricane claim, which makes October 9, 2025, the cutoff for Milton. Use October 9, 2024, as your date of loss unless your insurer told you otherwise. Time is not on your side, so while you might not see anything obvious, it’s a good idea to get a professional over to take a look. If you find something after the deadline, you’re on your own.

After that, stack the proof like leftovers after Thanksgiving. Wide shots. Close-ups. Roof, attic, ceilings, exterior, and even that mysterious water spot shaped like the state of Florida. Tarp or dry out what you can, and keep every receipt like it’s a golden ticket. Already filed and just found more damage. No worries, you can still send a supplemental claim up to April 9, 2026, as long as you opened the first one on time. And just so we’re clear, this is about your insurance deadline. FEMA’s window tied to earlier storms is closed.

The cutoff date should light a fire, but if you’re thinking you’ll wait until the season ends. Cute. Unless you want to reenact the tornado scene from The Wizard of Oz, get an inspection ASAP. Existing damage is like a wobbly Jenga tower. One breezy afternoon and a simple shingle fix turns into “why is my roof auditioning for a flying carpet?”

You can contact Steadfast Roofing today. They can inspect, take photos, and hand you a clean, written report your insurer will actually read. They are local, they are quick, and they speak Insurance.

Do not wait. Because your roof belongs over your head, not on it.

Where Did Boyette Go? A Riverview Story

Part 3: The Fade Into Riverview

As roads improved and development shifted north and west, Boyette’s center of gravity weakened. Stores changed hands, fields turned over, and new subdivisions replaced open land. By 2010 the census folded Boyette’s boundaries into Riverview, a paper change that matched what locals already felt on the ground: the old town was now a neighborhood threaded into something larger.

Is That Fall I Feel?

Sweater Weather Season

What constitutes sweater weather around here is anything below 85. And if you’re a teenager, it’s a year-round fashion trend. But as the leaves start to change, the likelihood of hurricanes picks up, and the humidity drops by 1%, I get that jazzy little feeling in my step.

Yep, I love fall in Florida, which is like saying I don’t like fall at all. But on those few days when I can walk outside and not immediately break into a sweat, I’m going to celebrate. Consider this a PSA that we’re almost there. (Fingers crossed.)

It’s not just the mid-70s that get me singing. It’s the pomp and circumstance of it all. Fall is the time for magic, for holidays, for festivals, and all the things that wake up my spirit. This is when being outside becomes a full-time sport and every weekend is an adventure.

After such a scorching summer, please believe I’m going to every outdoor event this fall. And we’re going to do our best to let you know about them. Halloween is my favorite holiday, so of course, we’re gonna run with that theme as long as we can. But fall festivals, school musicals, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, outdoor music—everything in between—we’re on the hunt.

If you have an event, especially if admission is free, let us know and we’ll get the word out. Email us at [email protected].

Because I can feel Fall in the air, and it’s time to get festive.

We Talk A Lot About Community

Now Let’s Act Like One

Let me tell you about this place called ECHO. If you’ve ever wondered where your donated cans, coats, and kindness go, it’s ECHO. If you’ve ever wondered if there’s a hand to help people up when they fall, it’s ECHO. They’re your neighborhood safety net, the local nonprofit that, for many, can be the only thing standing between them and complete collapse. Their mission is noble. Their hearts are big. Their goals are lofty. But it takes a village. So we’re calling on the community.

They’re hosting the Empower Breakfast on Wednesday, October 15, 8:00–9:00 a.m. at The Regent (6437 Watson Rd, Riverview). It’s a one-hour, feel-good morning that fuels ECHO’s life-stabilizing programs, and yes, breakfast is included.

Why go? Because every dollar raised keeps pantry shelves stocked, wardrobes ready for interviews, and neighbors moving from crisis to stability. Businesses can also jump in as sponsors or hosts.

We say things like support local and talk about how much community matters. Well, let’s step up and put action to words. Grab a seat, bring a friend, and help ECHO keep our neighbors on their feet.
