Riverview…The New Brandon

From quiet suburb to booming hotspot, Riverview is becoming Brandon faster than anyone expected

Hear me out. I remember what Brandon used to look like decades ago. Two-lane roads, orange groves, very little traffic, and mom and pop stores everywhere. But growth is an unstoppable force. It’s always moving, always expanding, always looking for the next place to build a multiplex. And that same slow, intentional change that brought Brandon to what it is today is happening right now in Riverview. In Southshore. In real time.

Zoom out for a second. Riverview is road construction. New apartments. New housing developments. Franchise and corporate businesses on every corner. Yesterday, I drove past where they’re building the new Ford’s Garage on 301 and thought back to when Belmont was first being built. Back then, I remember thinking, who in their right mind is coming all the way out here?

Fast forward to today, and that’s where everything is. Publix. Wawa. McDonald’s. Chick-fil-A. Starbucks. It’s like a corporate roll call. And this isn’t a complaint. It’s just an observation. Because growth is what happens. You can complain about it all you want, but it’s always on the horizon.

If we’re being honest, a lot of us asked for it. Better shopping. More options. Less driving. And now we’re getting it.

I’ve been hearing rumors about a mall out this way since I was a teenager. At this point, that’s really the only thing missing. The day that shows up is probably the day it’s official. We’re the new Brandon.

But since we don’t have one yet, there’s still time to do this right. Let’s make sure we keep a few local places around. Restaurants where people know your name. Where you might see the owner at the local produce stand. Service companies that actually believe in service. Where if something goes wrong, you get a call from the owner. Realtors who don’t just sell you a house, but show you the area. Take you to their favorite local spot after closing. Tell you about the graveyard with the glow-in-the-dark casket.

It’s easy to become “those guys.” The “locals” who hate even the smell of change. But it’s easier to forget what made a special place special. And that’s what I’m afraid of.

So while everything around us continues to grow, maybe the goal isn’t to fight it. Maybe it’s just to make sure we keep a few originals around. Because growth is great. But so is remembering the reason you grew in the first place.

Monday Money Minute

Your First Investment Might Be Hidden in Your Subscriptions

Everyone talks about investing like you need extra money to get started. But most people already have it. They’re just leaking it.

Subscriptions are the biggest culprit. The $9.99 here, $14.99 there, the free trial you forgot to cancel. Stack them up and you could be losing $100 to $300 a month without realizing it.

Here’s the play. Go through your last 30 days of transactions and cut anything you don’t use consistently. Be honest. If you haven’t touched it in the last two weeks, it goes. Now, instead of letting that money disappear, redirect it.

Set up an automatic transfer for the exact amount you just freed up into an investment account. Could be an index fund, retirement account, whatever fits your plan. That’s your starting point.

Because investing isn’t always about finding more money. Sometimes it’s just about reclaiming the money you’re already losing and putting it to work.

Quantum tech could make location spoofing impossible by using the laws of physics

What if proving where you are didn’t rely on GPS, IP addresses, or even trust… but on the laws of the universe itself? That’s exactly what scientists are working on.

It’s called quantum position verification, and the idea is to use quantum physics to confirm someone is physically standing exactly where they claim to be.

Here’s the simple version. It uses something known as quantum entanglement, where two particles are linked no matter how far apart they are. Scientists can send one of those particles to a person claiming to be in a specific location. That person has to measure it and respond instantly.

If everything lines up perfectly, they’re exactly where they said they were. If not, the system knows something’s off. Because of how fast light travels and how quantum measurements work, you can’t fake this from somewhere else without creating tiny inconsistencies that give you away. In other words, you can’t just spoof your location. Physics itself would call you out.

Down the line, this could help stop things like hacked logins, fake access attempts, or even secure highly sensitive locations where you physically have to be there to get in.

It’s still early, and not something you’ll see tomorrow. But the shift is interesting. Security has always been about passwords and code. Now it might come down to the rules of reality itself.

Southshore Spotlight

A hidden gem in Brandon, Creative Junk Therapy is a nonprofit creative reuse center that turns everyday “junk” into opportunity. By collecting donated materials and giving them new life through art, classes, and community spaces, they help artists, students, and families create, connect, and rethink what waste really is. It’s part thrift store, part art studio, and all about creativity with purpose.
