☀️ Southshore Summer Warning: Hydrate or Hibernate

Well Southshore, it’s that time again. Summer’s knocking—and this one’s coming in hot. Literally.
Pack your water bottles, slap on some sunscreen, throw on those shades and a wide-brimmed hat, because according to NOAA, this summer is expected to sizzle more than 2 degrees above our already sweat-inducing average. Translation? It’s going to be brutal.
And unfortunately, every year, the summer swelter sends dozens to the ER. Whether you're crushing it on the pickleball court, training for that 10k, floating in the bay, or just trying to chill on the boat, Florida heat doesn’t discriminate. Dehydration and heat exhaustion can sneak up fast—with symptoms like dizziness, nausea, and flat-out fatigue.
That’s why this week we’re highlighting our partner Wellness Vitalized and their energy-boosting, heat-taming IV hydration therapy.

IV hydration is like air-conditioning for your bloodstream—rapidly replenishing fluids and nutrients directly into your system for maximum absorption. It’s a fast, effective way to bounce back from dehydration, restore energy levels, and keep your summer vibes high.

🌿 A Wave of Seaweed is Headed for Florida—And It’s Breaking Records

If your summer plans include a beach day, you might want to pack some nose plugs.
Scientists are tracking a massive bloom of sargassum seaweed—so large it's setting records—and it’s drifting toward Florida’s coast. This floating mat of seaweed, part of the 5,000-mile-long Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt, reached historic highs in April and could wash up on beaches across South Florida and the Gulf Coast in the weeks ahead.
What’s the big deal?
🔹 It smells terrible as it rots—think rotten eggs on a hot day.
🔹 It can cause respiratory irritation in some people.
🔹 It’s a tourism and economic buzzkill, blanketing beaches and driving visitors away.
The bloom is fueled by nutrient-rich runoff, warming ocean temps, and shifting currents. While it’s great for marine life out at sea, once it hits the sand—it’s another story.
Scientists at USF are closely monitoring the situation with advanced satellite tracking, and while they’re hoping for the best, the forecast is… well, a little stinky.
We’ll keep you posted as this salty saga unfolds.

Sumner Softball Isn’t Done Yet

#unfinishedbusiness
The Sumner Varsity Stingrays are one step closer to glory after a nail-biting 3–2 victory over the Newsome Wolves on Tuesday night.
It was a pitcher’s duel from the start, but Sumner’s Victoria Baker proved unshakable on the mound, going the distance with 21 outs recorded. She allowed just two runs (one earned) over seven innings, striking out two and walking one.
Sumner struck first with a single from Karlee Salisbury in the opening frame, followed by an RBI from Rachael Philmon in the second. Newsome rallied to tie it 2–2 in the fifth, thanks to a clutch single from Emily Grooms.
But in the sixth, Baker came through again—this time with the bat—laying down a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt to bring in the go-ahead run.
Salisbury led the Stingrays at the plate, going 2-for-3. Baker, Philmon, and Salisbury each tallied an RBI.
With this win, Sumner advances to the Regional Finals—and if this gritty performance is any indication, they’re far from finished.
