A Headstart on Hiring

Hillsborough’s Future Career Academy Business Panel Series is bringing employers straight into high schools for real talk on jobs, training, and what comes after graduation. The nine-day series will reach roughly 15,000 seniors across 31 campuses, building on classroom lessons about resumes, interviews, and professional communication.
Expect big local names like TECO, BayCare, HCA, Mosaic, and AdventHealth. The goal: every senior leaves with a plan and a few contacts who remember their name.
Mark your calendar: on October 15, the panels will be at schools in the Southshore area. Tell your senior to polish the resume, bring a notebook, collect emails, and show up curious. Career fairs and hiring events roll out in the spring, with many students interviewing before graduation.

Southshore After Dark

Part 3: I-10 to 301 Running on Fumes
They chased sunsets through diner coffee and broken neon. Lisa signed motel ledgers with names that didn’t fit her face. Toby promised warm water in January and fish that jump just to say hello. Dessert nights faded into Florida sunrises.
They found a room near US 301 and the Alafia. Their escape didn’t last. Outside the window, rain stitched the night into one dark sheet. Sirens drifted past, then circled back.
They left what little they had, slipped out the rear, and ran for the river. A lonely jon boat waited. They tied on a lantern and pushed into water the color of strong tea. The current took them like a hand. Blue lights found the empty bridge behind.
Toby stared ahead. Two cold glows rose under the surface. Something long scraped the hull once. Then twice. The third scrape didn’t slide away.

Storm Watch

Karen was looking for trouble, but she’s already fizzled into a weak subtropical swirl way out in the North Atlantic with no plans to visit. Meanwhile, Jerry’s staying out at sea and minding his own business, so there’s no tropical bullseye on Southshore right now.
Closer to home, Ruskin’s weather crew says expect breezy northeast winds, a few passing showers, and choppy bays through Saturday. Boaters, take it easy. Land folks, secure the yard decor so your 12-foot skeleton doesn’t wave at the neighbors all night. The good news: a drier, slightly cooler stretch slides in late weekend into next week.
Bottom line: low tropical risk, a bit windy, then nicer. Keep alerts on, weigh down the pumpkins like a Publix BOGO, and enjoy the fall-ish vibes while they last.
Speaking of Publix

We normally don’t cover things like this because, well, everyone else does. But we can file this under Florida being Florida. Or maybe Florida being Texas. Next time you’re grabbing a pub sub, don’t be shocked by the next person in lines AR 15. In a move that’s certain to make hurricane shopping a must-watch, Publix has gone all in on open carry.
After a Florida appeals court struck down the state’s decades-old open-carry ban (effective Sept. 25), Publix says it will follow the new law and allow open carry in Florida stores. Private businesses still have the right to ask someone to leave, and stores will call law enforcement if behavior turns threatening. For Southshore shoppers, expect a patchwork across retailers, keep an eye on posted signs, and keep the cart line moving.

Now listen… i received a spooky service request last week.
The poor homeowner said, “Every time we flush a toilet… the walls moan, the toilets groan, and the whole second floor starts to shake!” 😱
I said, “Sir… Now I’m no ghost hunter, but when your toilets start howling at night — that’s not the spirits trying to escape. That’s your plumbing crying for help!” 💀🚽
If your bathroom starts sounding like a haunted house — or your toilet’s doing the Monster Mash — don’t call an exorcist…
Call Kuma Plumbing and Drain!
We’ll bring your pipes back from the dead We’ll flush out the fright and bring your home back to peaceful plumbing paradise.
