Southshore Vibes Are On The Rise

Thereâs something special about life in Southshore. Maybe itâs the salty breeze off the bay, the unspoken bond between golf cart drivers, or the way neighbors still wave when they pass each other, whether theyâve known you for 20 years or 20 minutes.
But lately, youâve probably felt it too: things are changing.
The pace is picking up. New shops are popping up. Roads are getting busier. Weâre seeing more faces, more flavors, more energy. And while change can sometimes feel like itâs pushing the old ways aside, here in Southshore, it feels more like weâre evolving.
This isnât the kind of growth that erases what came before. Itâs the kind that builds on it. A new coffee shop opens, and itâs packed with people who still smile and ask how your dayâs going. A fresh neighborhood springs up, and before long, its residents are pitching in at community events or cheering on the local high school team.
As a longtime local, I find it exciting. Our community is expanding, but itâs not losing its soul. If anything, itâs becoming even more connected. While some might hear the term Southshore and roll their eyes, the towns that make it up are still very much their own. Sun City Center is still the land of golf carts and early dinners. Apollo Beach still has the nature preserve, just donât expect a quiet sunset all to yourself anymore. And Riverview still anchors us to our northern neighbors in Brandon, holding that line between small-town calm and big-city convenience.
So yes, the pace is picking up. And yes, we may be trading a few quiet roads for new opportunities. But as long as we hang onto the things that matter, kindness, connection, and that unmistakable Southshore charm, I say letâs grow. Letâs welcome whatâs next while holding tight to who we are.
Because no matter how big we get or how fast we move, this place still feels like home to me.

đڏââď¸ COMIC CONQUERORS: TAMPAâS NERDIEST WEEKEND IS IN FULL SWING đŚšââď¸

If youâve spotted more capes, cloaks, or oddly realistic lightsabers around Tampa this weekend, youâre not imagining things. Tampa Bay Comic Con is back, and itâs currently taking over the Tampa Convention Center through today, August 3.
Over 50,000 fans are making the pilgrimage, many in full costume, to celebrate all things nerdy, nostalgic, and absolutely awesome. Weâve seen Gandalfs roaming the halls like theyâre late for Mordor, R2-D2 units rolling around unbothered, and more Spider-People than a multiverse should legally allow. (And yes, Princess Bubblegum was spotted deep in discussion with a very determined Kim Possible.)
As a science fiction writer myself, this is my kind of crowd. Comic Con is one of those rare spaces where imagination is currency, and nobody bats an eye when youâre arguing about which timeline version of a character is canon. It's loud, colorful, and chaotic in the best possible way.
If youâre from Southshore and have never been, this is your sign. Youâve still got time to swing by today. Whether youâre a longtime fan, dragging your kids along, or just in it for the cosplay and people-watching, itâs worth the trip. Who knows? You might leave with a lightsaber and a new obsession.

When hurricanes knock out power and cell service, most of us are left hitting refresh on apps that wonât load. But in Sun City Center, the Kings Point Amateur Radio Club is making sure our community still has a voice.
During last yearâs storms, when phones went dark, this local group handled over ten emergency calls, relaying messages, checking in on neighbors, and keeping people connected. Every week, they run radio check-ins with over 100 participants, so when disaster hits, theyâre ready.
Theyâre growing fast, offering radios to new members, and proving that when modern tech fails, old-school know-how still gets the job done.
If youâre updating your hurricane kit, consider adding more than batteries and bottled water. A radio and a connection to this network might be the smartest prep move you make this season.
