Want to get your business in The Southshore Circle? Let’s talk!
TURKEY TIME IS CLOSING IN ON THE SHORE
Before Thanksgiving gets gobbled up by the other Holiday, let’s see what turkey-inspired fun is coming to Southshore.
In Today’s Edition:
Florida’s Thanksgiving History
The Waterset Turkey Trot
Tis the season for giving
THANKSGIVING…it all started here
It may come as a surprise to you, but Thanksgiving’s origins actually start in Florida. That’s right, 50 years before the pilgrims ever landed on Plymouth Rock, Spanish colonists and Native Americans sat down for a feast. Michael Gannon, University of Florida professor notes, “it was the first community act of religion and thanksgiving in the first permanent settlement in the land.”
In true Florida fashion the menu was a bit different and while it included the same wild turkey you can find gobbling around Southshore, there was also alligator, venison, bear, and tortoise. A feast it was however, the French massacre that occurred two weeks later at the hands of the same Spanish colonists overshadowed what should’ve been the first Thanksgiving. But hey, you can’t win em’ all.
TURKEYS CAN RUN UP TO 25 MPH. HOW FAST ARE YOU?
For more than 5 years, the path that loops around the lake in Waterset, has been a great place for those wishing to pregame before turkey time, and raise money for the local schools. At 8am Thanksgiving morning, hundreds of locals will take to the streets to round out a 5k run. The perfect preemptive strike, before the day of gluttony begins. Can you think of a better way to prep for all that turkey?
Whether you plan to run, walk, or a mixture of both, all are welcome. The Turkey Trot is a great way to start your Thanksgiving and make an impact on the community. Make sure to click on the link in the events section to register, and get started early on that New Year’s resolution.
MEALS ON WHEELS IS CALLING ALL CARS
I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking for a way to help during the holidays. It’s the time when people come together and family is more important than ever. But sometimes that family isn’t around or can’t make the trip. That’s when community steps up and steps in.
Meals on wheels has a fantastic program where they deliver pies, handmade cards, and other items to our elderly neighbors that are likely spending the holidays alone. Volunteer drivers make the holidays a little brighter by taking a tiny bit of time out of their day (9:30am-11:00am) on Thanksgiving morning.
The Southshore has gone through a bit of a rough patch as of late and we’ve leaned on community to get us through. Let’s not forget the elderly population who often suffer in silence. If you can spare the time, I’m sure you’ll make someone’s day. More information can be found HERE
