From the Court to the Community

We usually don’t talk about ourselves in this newsletter, mostly because I rarely do anything newsworthy. Unless, of course, you count demolishing six Nuclear-sauced wings at the Apollo Beach Beef 'O' Brady’s without shedding a tear. #winning

But in all seriousness, this newsletter has never been about us. It’s always been for you, the community, and about the things that make this corner of the world a great place to call home (traffic not included).

That said, some of you may not know that in addition to writing what are arguably some of the most riveting stories this town has ever heard, we’ve also spent the better part of the last decade coaching a teenage travel basketball team: the Apollo Beach Thunder. Since 2015, the Thunder has claimed most of our spring and summer weekends. And this Sunday, as I sat at our final fundraiser of our final season, it hit me just how much this journey has meant.

We've met incredible families, watched young athletes grow on and off the court, and felt the unwavering support of this community every step of the way. Southshore and Apollo Beach is really an amazing place.

So I just want to say thank you to every person who’s ever worn an Apollo Beach Thunder shirt, bought a raffle ticket, donated a few bucks outside Winn-Dixie, or supported us in countless other ways. You helped make it possible for hundreds of teens to spend their summers competing, bonding, and chasing their dreams.

To all the players and families we’ve crossed paths with, this has truly been one of the most rewarding chapters of my life. And I hope I’ve imparted even a slight positive influence on your sons as they tackle this wild world we live in.

And to the Mobleys, the Tuchs, the Selfs, the Buzbees, and the many, many others who gave so much of their time and hearts—thank you for everything.

Not So Fast

You may have been distracted lately by those fancy new "cruising lights" the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is using. (Still shaking my head on that one.) But while everyone’s talking about the glow-up, not enough people are noticing the real trend on our roads—speed traps are popping up all over Southshore.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m all for slowing down the speed demons who think Apollo Beach Boulevard is the Daytona 500. But here's the thing. When the speed limit drops from 55 to 35 in what feels like 20 yards and there's a patrol car waiting in the bushes like it's deer season, I call foul on the play.

It's not about dodging tickets. It's about common sense. These sudden, dramatic speed limit shifts aren’t just frustrating, they’re confusing. And more than a few residents have shared their own stories of getting nabbed without even realizing the limit had changed.

So, how about a little uniformity? Maybe a few more signs, a little more distance between the speed drops, or—I don't know—a warning instead of a fine for going 42 in a zone that was 55 three seconds ago?

Southshore’s growing. Roads are changing. But if the goal is safer streets, let's make it easier to follow the rules without feeling like we’re in a real-life game of “Gotcha.”
