If You Love This Community, Prove It

Supporting local businesses and neighbors is one of the most effective ways to preserve what makes our community special

If you get this newsletter in your inbox every day, then you're probably pretty cool. Which is to say I'm likely preaching to the choir. But for the folks who had this forwarded to them, found it online, or just aren't regular readers, I hope you're of the same mind as well.

You see, we started this thing to promote and support the local community while keeping people informed about the things that matter to locals. A lot of times that's traffic, growth, or whatever new business is popping up on the corner.

And while some amount of development is to be expected as an area grows, the thought of losing what makes this place feel like this place is pretty scary. But here's the thing. We can't just complain about growth and cookie-cutter mega companies moving in. We have to do more than talk.

If we want to make a difference and slow down the steamroller of change, we need to support the local businesses that are already here. The family-owned restaurants. The local meat markets. The produce stands. The shops owned by people who live in the same neighborhoods we do. But that goes both ways.

Local businesses have a responsibility to support the community, too. That means great customer service. Hiring local people. Giving back when they can. Making sure customers feel like neighbors instead of just another transaction. That's how communities last.

Not because they stopped growth. Not because they avoided change. But because the people who live there chose to invest in each other. Communities with strong local businesses, engaged residents, and people who genuinely care about where they live tend to keep their identity a lot longer than those that don't.

As they say, it takes a village. Let's make sure we're still one. And not just when disaster strikes. All year round.

Your Weekly What in the World

What did the Fox say? We might find out soon.

For years, we've been told artificial intelligence was going to change the world. And to be fair, it has. Mostly by creating people with seven fingers, turning everyone into action figures, and filling Facebook with promo images that should have stayed inside a computer.

But now AI may actually be doing something pretty incredible. Scientists around the world are using artificial intelligence to help decode animal communication. Researchers are feeding massive amounts of sounds, movements, and behavioral data from whales, dolphins, birds, monkeys, and household pets into AI systems looking for patterns humans can't detect on their own.

The goal? Figure out what animals are actually saying to each other. Researchers believe AI could eventually help identify whether certain sounds communicate danger, food, emotions, social status, or even something resembling names.

That's right. Your dog may not just be barking. He might be delivering a detailed complaint about dinner being late. Scientists aren't suggesting we're about to sit down and have conversations with our pets. But AI is remarkably good at finding patterns hidden inside enormous amounts of data, and animal communication generates plenty of it.

Imagine discovering that dolphins have regional accents. Or that whales tell stories. Or that your cat has spent the last decade repeatedly calling you an idiot. Honestly, that last one feels pretty likely.

There's still a long way to go, but for once AI may be doing something more useful than generating photos of Abraham Lincoln eating tacos while riding an alligator through Times Square. For once, we might actually find out what the fox had to say.

Southshore Spotlight

ECHO has spent nearly 40 years helping local families get back on their feet. For nearly four decades, ECHO has been quietly helping families across Eastern Hillsborough County navigate some of life's toughest moments.

With locations in Brandon and Riverview, the nonprofit provides food, clothing, job assistance, financial counseling, and other support services designed to help people regain stability after unexpected setbacks.

As housing costs and everyday expenses continue to rise, organizations like ECHO serve as an important reminder that sometimes a little help can make a big difference. And for thousands of local families over the years, that's exactly what ECHO has provided.
