The Town The River Swallowed

Part 4

She brought back photographs and shared them with others.

They showed fences. Trees. Empty fields. Nothing remarkable.

But the woman described something else ghostly outlines of buildings long gone: a chapel, half-collapsed. A barn, blackened by fire. And in one photo, she swore a man was standing there…

Staring directly at her.

Not a blur. Not a trick of the lens.

A man clear, focused, impossibly alive. And he was pleading, she said. Pleading for her to follow.

But no one else could see him. No one else could see any of the things she saw.

She never took another photo. But she didn’t stop going back.

Always at dusk. Always alone.

They say she’s still out there, searching. For the town the river swallowed. For the whispers of what once was.

So if you ever find yourself walking the south bank of the Alafia, just before the sun slips below the trees—stop.

Listen.

You might hear it:

“Welcome back.”

And then you’ll know…

You’ve found Peru.

$709 Million and a Mop

If it feels like the last couple hurricane seasons have been a blur of wind, water, and "wait, is my roof still on?"—you’re not alone. (Shout out to Steadfast Roofing)

In the span of just over a year, Hillsborough County took a beating:

  • August 2023: Hurricane Idalia showed up uninvited and flash-flooded the place like it was auditioning for Waterworld.

  • August 2024: Hurricane Debby breezed through with her own brand of high winds and neighborhood soaking.

  • September 2024: Hurricane Helene didn’t stick around long, but her storm surge left a mess that sure did.

  • October 2024: And then came Milton, a Category 3 bully with 100+ mph winds and rain that overstayed its welcome. Many homes were flooded, roofs were wrecked, and a lot of people found themselves couch-surfing until repairs could catch up.

But here’s some good news, for once: READ MORE

Food For Thought: 🛞 Southshore Roads Are a Hot Mess—Let’s Talk About It

Is it just me, or are all the roads in Hillsborough County about three drops of rain away from collapsing into a hidden underground aquifer?

From crumbling asphalt to patch jobs that look like they were done blindfolded with a shovel and a dream, there’s a real warzone vibe happening out there. The county. The state. Whoever’s in charge needs to do better—because these days, getting from Apollo Beach to Riverview feels like competing in a pothole-themed obstacle course.

Road closures, detours, last-minute lane changes—it’s become the new normal. And Southshore? We deserve better.
